Managing Travel in Turbulent Times: What the Data (and Experts) Say About What Comes Next

Right now, in a business travel landscape defined by whiplash changes and economic pressure, leaders aren’t just being asked to cut costs — they’re being asked to predict the unpredictable. But while no one has a crystal ball, there is a growing body of historical data, operational insight, and strategic lessons that can help travel programs chart smarter paths forward.

That’s exactly what we explored in our recent webinar, The Corner: Managing Travel in Turbulent Times, featuring expert panelists from TechnipFMC, GoldSpring Consulting, Lanes & Planes, and Cornerstone.

Below are some of the biggest insights, plus a link to the full webinar recording now available on demand.

Recessions Hit Travel Harder — and the Recovery is Slower

If you’re leading a travel program today, you’re not just reacting to one economic event, you’re reacting to a pattern.

“When the economy dips, travel gets hit first — and it doesn’t bounce back as quickly.”
— Will Tate, Partner at GoldSpring Consulting

Over the past 25 years, travel and meetings spending have consistently declined more and recovered less than GDP during recessionary cycles. According to Cornerstone’s compiled data:

  • Business travel declines at 19x the rate of GDP.
  • Corporate meeting spend drops at 24.8x GDP declines.
  • Recovery is painfully slow:
  • GDP typically recovers in ~2 quarters
  • Travel takes over 7 quarters
  • Meetings can take 9 or more

Visibility Is Your New Superpower

One recurring theme throughout the discussion was the importance of clean, actionable data.

“You can’t make smart cuts if you’re running blind. Our job isn’t just to reduce spend — it’s to spend wisely.”
— Ginny Roelant, Global Travel Manager at TechnipFMC

The panelists emphasized that high-performing teams aren’t just reactive — they’re analytically aggressive. They’ve built infrastructure that gives them a real-time, unified view of spend, policy compliance, supplier performance, and traveler behavior.

The problem? Most programs still run on disconnected systems and lagging reports, which means that decisions are made weeks late, based on incomplete or messy data.

The Data You Need Isn’t Just “Collected” — It’s Conditioned

It’s not enough to gather data. For real strategic value, you need:

  • Normalization across platforms and regions
  • Deduplication to remove overlapping records
  • Enrichment to fill in gaps (e.g. department, trip purpose, carbon impact)
  • Speed, so insights aren’t three reporting cycles behind the business

This is where tools like Upstream come into play. Panelists shared how normalized, real-time data allows their teams to model different what-if scenarios, benchmark supplier performance, and make defensible decisions when asked to cut or reallocate spend.

“If your policy is based on data that’s 60 days old and your TMC dashboard only tells you half the story, you’re going to miss.”
— Mitch Gross, VP of Product Strategy at Cornerstone

Not All Travel Should Be Saved — But Not All Should Be Cut, Either

Another insight from the session: smarter travel isn’t always about less travel. The panel talked candidly about hard tradeoffs.

  • When to cancel events
  • When to double down on client meetings
  • How to align with execs who may be pushing for cuts without context

Raj Das of Lanes & Planes noted how some clients have shifted to risk-weighted travel models, combining macroeconomic indicators with internal travel ROI benchmarks to decide what gets greenlit.
